The inverter is the heart of most all renewable energy systems. Its job is to take the Direct Current (DC) power from the energy sources (solar, micro hydro) and storage (batteries) and turn it into Alternating Current (AC) power that we can use in our lights, tools, and appliances. In the off grid world inverters are often inverter/ chargers that will allow for them to charge batteries when there is available AC power from a generator or the grid. This allows us to most efficiently use the AC power that we do have as well as save the power in the batteries for when we need them.
When choosing an inverter please refer to our off grid inverter basics page that covers some of the different types of inverters and what they can do for us.
